Engineering Letter
You have indicated an interest in pursuing an intra-university transfer to the School of Engineering. Your application will be considered after grades for the current semester are available. Please contact engineering-oas@Vanderbilt.edu for assistance with planning an Engineering schedule. If your goal is to pursue a primary major in Computer Science, we recommend declaring it now as a second major or minor within your current school to facilitate registration.
The School of Engineering holds an information session each semester on two different dates. The information sessions have already concluded for Fall 2025 semester. If you would like to view a recording of the Microsoft Teams session please click on the following link: Intra-University Transfer Information Session (Virtual)-20251020_153626-Meeting Recording.mp4
To earn a degree in the School of Engineering, students must spend a minimum of four semesters including the last two semesters in residence in the School of Engineering. A student is considered "in residence" if the student is (a) physically present at Vanderbilt and enrolled in Vanderbilt University classes offered on campus, or (b) enrolled in at least 12 credit hours in an approved Vanderbilt study away or abroad program.
Courses not accepted for credit by the School of Engineering will not be counted in determining grade point average and class standing. Your request for intra-university transfer will be approved when you have met the appropriate credit hour and grade point average requirements as indicated below:
- A student who has been in residence for two semesters is to have a minimum of 24 hours and a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.800 in transferable work to be admitted.
- A student who has been in residence for three semesters is to have a minimum of 39 hours and a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.850 in transferable work to be admitted.
- A student who has been in residence for four semesters is to have a minimum of 54 hours and a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.900 in transferable work to be admitted.
- Intra-university transfer applications will not be considered for students who have spent five or more semesters at VU outside of the School of Engineering.
- A student who entered Vanderbilt University (VU) as a first-year and wants to complete a primary major in the School of Engineering, a minimum of six semesters and at least 90 credit hours must be spent in residence at VU with a minimum of four semesters including the last two semesters spent in residence in the School of Engineering (SoE).
- A student who has transferred to Vanderbilt from another institution and wants to complete a primary major in the School of Engineering, a minimum of four semesters including the last two semesters and at least 63 credit hours must be spent in residence in the School of Engineering.
- A student must complete at least two semesters of college calculus and two semesters of laboratory-based science as required in the intended major before transferring to the School of Engineering. To support timely graduation, students applying to transfer after three or more semesters of university study must have completed more of the math, science, and other foundational courses required in the major and must present a curriculum plan showing how they will meet all degree requirements. A student’s pathway forward in Engineering must lead to a timely graduation.
- Average 2.0 GPA in all STEM courses taken at Vanderbilt (e.g., calculus, laboratory science and all School of Engineering coursework).
Vanderbilt engineering students are required to have a portable computer that will run software needed for in-class use. The recommended minimum specifications can be viewed on the Computer Specifications webpage .
Transferring from one school to another within the university may result in the loss of credit hours and/or affect financial aid. If you should require financial assistance as a result of transferring from your current school into another, please contact the Office of Financial Aid, 615-322-3591.
