New Courses vs. Renumbering
Below are guidelines to help determine whether a new course ID should be created or an existing course should be renumbered.
Course Renumber (Same Course ID)
Course ID should be renumbered if –
- Learning outcomes/objectives remain substantially the same
- Course content is largely unchanged (at least 66%)
- Level change is administrative only (e.g., 2010 → 2100 within the same level)
Examples –
- Aligning with a new numbering scheme
- Cleaning up catalog inconsistencies
- Moving a course within a sequence without changing substance
New Course (New Course ID)
A new course ID should be created if –
- Learning outcomes are substantially different
- Course content is significantly redesigned
- Course level changes (e.g., 2000 → 3000, undergrad → graduate)
- Target audience changes (majors vs. non-majors)
- Prerequisites change significantly: Changes that materially alter required prior knowledge, e.g., like the course level changes
- Course is replacing an old one but not equivalent
Examples –
- Curriculum redesign
- New pedagogical approach (e.g., lecture → practicum)
- Accreditation-driven changes
- Program restructuring
Flow Chart
If a student took the old version, would you consider this course equivalent?
Yes → Renumber
No → New course
Course Cloning – Mezzanine and Other Special Circumstances
If duplicating a course in Kuali, add a note at the top of the Additional Information section. The course ID must be removed before processing. Without a note, the wrong course may be updated
